Photo Walk – A Whale of a time in Whitby, North Yorkshire

Whitby Abbey

Whitby is a wonderful seaside town, port in North Yorkshire. Situated on the east coast of Yorkshire at the mouth of the River Esk, Whitby has a maritime, mineral and tourist heritage. Its East Cliff is home to the ruins of Whitby Abbey, where Cædmon, the earliest recognised English poet, lived. The fishing port emerged during the Middle Ages, supporting important herring and whaling fleets, and was where Captain Cook learned seamanship. Tourism started in Whitby during the Georgian period and developed with the arrival of the railway in 1839. Its attraction as a tourist destination is enhanced by the proximity of the high ground of the North York Moors national park and the heritage coastline and by association with the horror novel Dracula.

Photography Suggestions

Whitby offers super photography opportunities including in and around the town centre, the fishing port, miles of beautiful coastline and the abbey ruins. Take the Dracula walking route and you will get great views of the town from both sides of the estuary. The winding streets of the town are busy at most times of the year with people enjoying the cafes, shops and of course the famous fish and chip restaurants. Walking Routes

Walks in and nearby Whitby

Recommended – Whitby Dracula Trail A 4 mile circular trail from Whitby in North Yorkshire, taking in many of the landmarks that form the setting for Bram Stoker’s classic novel, Dracula. The route follows a short section of the cliff top path (the Cleveland Way) with great views out across the North Sea, before looping in land on quiet rural lanes to reach the town. You will have the chance to photograph most of the town’s main sites as well as a strech of the more rugged coastal area.
